Today, February 25, at 1:30 pm, the San Jose City Council will consider their Council Policy Priority Nominations. Please contact Mayor Sam Liccardo and the City Council and urge them to OPPOSE the “Gun Harm Reduction” nomination.
One of Mayor Sam Liccardo’s priority nominations is of utmost concern to law-abiding gun owners. This nomination punishes law-abiding gun owners for owning a lawful product by forcing them to pay an unknown fee (tax) and/or purchasing insurance to cover the city’s cost related to the criminal misuse of firearms. In addition to these unspecified costs, the Mayor's stated goal would be "behavior modification". This not-so-innovative idea has been tossed around for several years not only last year in California but with Congress in 2013 and 2015.
Taxing and requiring insurance will do nothing to reduce gun violence. Instead it will increase the costs on law-abiding citizens to exercise their rights. Additionally, this is clearly a ploy by the Mayor to raise money for the city as even the budget implication listed on this nomination states, “If implemented, the proposal will result in a net gain to the General Fund.”
Please forward this important message to your family, friends, and fellow gun-owners living in San Jose and urge them to contact the City Council to OPPOSE the “Gun Harm Reduction” nomination.
