California: San Carlos to Consider Further Extending the Moratorium on Firearm Dealers TODAY

This evening, November 27, the San Carlos City Council will consider extending a moratorium on new firearm dealers for the City.  As we reported earlier, the moratorium is a result of several anti-gun residents opposing a new Turner's Outdoorsman that was scheduled to open this month.  The City Council recently voted 4 to 1 to enact a temporary 45-day moratorium to allow time for the City to consider implementing a more restrictive zoning ordinance.  If passed, the 45-day moratorium would be extended another 10 months and 15 days and will still prohibit Turner's from opening during that time.

The NRA and CRPA submitted a comprehensive joint-opposition letter to the City Council before it first adopted the 45-day moratorium.  The letter highlights the numerous complex and comprehensive requirements for becoming a California licensed firearms dealer, as well as all of the security, record keeping, and transfer requirements that all dealers, including Turner's Outdoorsman, must abide by when operating a firearm retail business in California.

Regardless of the complex and comprehensive requirements that Turner’s Outdoorsman will have gone through to be a licensed firearms dealer in California, opponents still argued that the proposed Turner's Outdoorsman store would somehow be detrimental to the public peace, health, welfare, and safety of San Carlos residents. This moratorium has nothing to do with the public peace, health, welfare, and safety of San Carlos residents.  This moratorium is just another red-tape tactic to make it more difficult for firearm retailers to operate and further limits the ability of law-abiding gun owners to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

We encourage all of our members who are able to attend tonight's meeting and voice their opposition, which is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM in Council Chambers, located at 600 Elm Street, San Carlos, CA 94070. Representatives of Turner's Outdoorsman will also be in attendance.

If you are unable to attend, you can call, fax, or email the City Council to oppose the proposed extension of the moratorium. You can do so using the following information:
