The Rhode Island Legislature will be adjourning any day now and it’s important that gun owners continue to contact their state Representative and state Senator in opposition to H. 5510A.
This gun control legislation, masquerading as domestic violence prevention, was passed last week by the House Judiciary Committee. The bill was amended, and H.5510A is likely to receive a full House vote early next week when lawmakers return to the Capitol.
Last year, the Legislature passed a domestic violence bill which mirrored federal law. H.5510 seeks to go beyond what is specified under federal law and expand the list of individuals that could be ensnared and forced to surrender their firearms and Second Amendment rights forever. NRA strongly supports harsh penalties for convicted violent abusers, however, there is no need for this legislation given current federal and state law. H.5510/ S.405 is nothing more than the centerpiece of a national gun control agenda being bankrolled by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. However, S.405 by Sen. Harold Metts and H.5510A by Rep. Teresa Tanzi could easily result in innocent, law-abiding gun owners having their rights stripped.
Because it is so late in the session, it’s critical that you continue to contact both your Representative and your state Senator immediately. Respectfully request that they oppose S.405/H.5510A. In addition, please contact Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and ask him to make sure this dangerous bill doesn’t come to a floor vote.
