This Wednesday, April 3, the Virginia General Assembly will reconvene for one day to consider amendments to Senate Bill 1378 submitted by Governor Bob McDonnell (R).
Senate Bill 1378, patroned by state Senator Thomas A. Garrett (R-22), increases penalties for individuals who knowingly assist prohibited persons in illegally obtaining firearms. S.B. 1378 passed in the House of Delegates by an 84-11 vote on February 20 after passing unanimously in the state Senate on February 15.
The amendment submitted by Governor McDonnell will strengthen S.B. 1378 by adding protections for law-abiding citizens by exempting purchases of a firearm by a person for the lawful use, possession or transport by his child, grandchild, or individual for whom he is the legal guardian if such child, grandchild, or individual is ineligible, solely because of his age, to purchase a firearm.
It is important that you contact your state Senator and Delegate TODAY and respectfully urge them to support Governor McDonnell’s pro-gun amendment to S.B. 1378. For help identifying your state legislators and contact information, please click here.
