House Bill 1199, sponsored by Representative Margaret Gillespie (D-16), was signed by Governor Mike Rounds (R), on Friday, March 3. HB 1199 will protect law-abiding South Dakota citizens by prohibiting the release of information concerning applicants and current permit holders to any person, and prohibits any lists or records of privately-owned firearms to be kept.
In addition, HB 1134, “Citizens Right to Self-Defense” legislation, which removes the “duty to retreat” when a citizen is faced with attack in a place that he or she has a right to be, was signed by Governor Rounds on Friday, February, 17.
