NRA Lauds West Virginia Governor Wise`s Signature <br>of Reckless-Lawsuit Preemption Bill

Thursday, March 27, 2003

FAIRFAX, VA-- In a victory for West Virginia gun-owners, Governor Bob Wise signed HB2110 today, a Bill that will end malicious lawsuits aimed at bankrupting the firearm`s industry. NRA`s chief lobbyist Chris Cox praised the signing as a significant step forward in stopping reckless litigation against a legitimate industry. So far, 32 states have adopted legislation to prevent cities and municipalities from filing suits against the lawful firearms industry.

"This is a victory for gun owners and all who believe that society must hold criminals accountable for their crimes," Cox said. "This is another blow to the gun ban lobby, who has pushed these reckless lawsuits in a futile attempt to achieve what they have failed to accomplish in state legislatures and in Congress-- ban gun ownership by law-abiding Americans. These reckless lawsuits are a blight on our judicial system."

Cox added, "Any attempt by the gun ban lobby and gluttonous trial lawyers to bankrupt the industry that supplies our military and law enforcement with the basic tools needed to battle terrorism is careless. This is especially contemptible now as we are a country at war."

"This legislation, which passed both Houses unanimously, would not have been possible without the deep support and hard work of the Majority Whip Delegate Scott Varner, Vice-Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Delegate Steve Kominar and Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Jeff Kessler," concluded Cox.

Currently, NRA is working with lawmakers at the federal level to pass Lawsuit Preemption legislation that would protect firearms manufacturers from reckless, politically motivated lawsuits. At present, there are 247 co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives and 52 co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate.
