NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS VOLUME 22, NUMBER 11
|
| | You didn’t need a crystal ball to see this one coming. On Monday, a week after the BATFE withdrew its plan to ban M855 as “armor-piercing ammunition,” U.S. Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) announced that he intends to introduce legislation to “extend the definition of armor-piercing ammunition to include all bullets that can pierce body armor and be used in handguns.” |
| | On March 13, 2015, three days after the BATFE rescinded its proposed ammo ban framework regulation, anti-gun U.S. Representative Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) introduced H.R. 1358, a bill designed to ban civilian use and possession of M855 ammunition. This is the same round that the BATFE, after meeting fierce bipartisan opposition from Capitol Hill and from NRA members and supporters across the country, decided to rescind its framework to ban M855 ammunition. |
| | As we reported last week, BATFE has for now tabled its “Framework” to ban M855/SS109 ammunition and to reinterpret the federal “armor piercing ammunition” law in a way that would also jeopardize other types of common rifle bullets. Nevertheless, BATFE director B. Todd Jones made clear (see related story on Jones’s resignation) recently in statements before the Senate Appropriations Committee that this battle is far from over. Fortunately, gun owners have an ally in U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), who on Monday, introduced the “Ammunition and Firearms Protection Act”, H.R. 1365, to prevent BATFE from acting on its plans. |
| | Friday, March 20, 2015, B. Todd Jones resigned as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), ending what has been a tumultuous tenure as the agency head since July 2013. |
| | This week, the nearly forgotten anti-gun crusaders, States United to Prevent Gun Violence (SUPGV), grasped at relevancy when they debuted their latest shenanigans targeting lawful gun ownership. Called “Guns With History,” the campaign aims to harangue first-time gun buyers for even considering the exercise of their rights. |
| | The Obama administration’s relentless assault on the Second Amendment continues as the State Department implements a new rule which catches American hunters and sport shooters in a web of bureaucratic red-tape when traveling outside the United States. Coming close on the heels of the withdrawn BATFE ammo ban we reported on last week, an unmistakable pattern of abuse is beginning to emerge, suggesting Obama’s last two years could prove the most challenging period in history for America’s gun owners. |
| | The U.S. Senate and U.S. House were back in session in Washington D.C. this week and because of your calls and emails, each of the NRA supported National Right-to-Carry bills have seen an increase in cosponsorship. Please continue to send a message to President Obama and Michael Bloomberg, that we want National Right to Carry Reciprocity. Please contact your elected officials and urge them to cosponsor and support these important bills: |
| | Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) could take the confirmation vote on President Obama’s U.S. Attorney General Nominee, Loretta Lynch, to the Senate floor as soon as next week. The vote will likely be very close. |
| | Anti-gun U.S. Representatives Peter King (R-N.Y.) and Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), have introduced new "universal" background check legislation in the form of H.R. 1217. This legislation is similar to the failed Obama and Bloomberg-backed legislation from last congress that attempted to create a “universal” background check system that would criminalize the private transfer of a firearm between life-long friends and even family members. |
| | The NRA-ILA Grassroots Division will be hosting the first ever Second Amendment Youth Leadership Conference during NRA’s Annual Meetings and Exhibits! Geared specifically toward the next generation of Second Amendment activists, this one-of-a kind event will be an exciting opportunity for college students to learn more about the Second Amendment and how to become a more effective advocate on their campus and in their community! (The event is open to all interested attendees, but its focus will be on college students.) |
| | The 144th NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits, at the Music City Center in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee, on April 10-12, 2015, are right around the corner! We hope you’ll be able to join us as we celebrate our firearms freedoms in a family-friendly environment. While you’re there, one of the best ways to support your NRA is by volunteering a few hours to help register guests, help out in the NRA Store, or with one of the many activities that help make the Annual Meetings a success. |
| | The 18th Annual National Firearms Law Seminar will be held on Friday, April 10, 2015 as part of the NRA Annual Meetings. The gold standard in firearms CLE classes, this day-long seminar provides legal instruction for attorneys and all others interested in Second Amendment law. Topics to be discussed include current litigation across the country, self-defense laws, firearm forensics in the courtroom, updates on gun trusts, the restoration of rights, veterans' concerns, and representing FFLs during ATF audits. |
| | In this news minute from the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, Jennifer Zahrn reports that the NRA is backing HR 1365 – a bill introduced in the U.S. House this week by Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina. The Ammunition and Firearms Protection Act would prevent the federal government from classifying M855 ammunition as “armor-piercing” and would block any attempt to use the federal “armor-piercing” ammunition law to ban ammunition that is designed, intended, and marketed for rifle use. |
