DAILY ALERT FOR Thursday, April 3, 2025 |
| | On April 1, 2025, Representative Ashley Hinson (R-IA-02) and Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) reintroduced the Repealing Illegal Freedom and Liberty Excises Act, or the RIFLE Act. These bills (H.R. 2552 and S.1224 respectively) would remove a $200 excise tax that is imposed on law-abiding gun owners when they purchase certain firearms and accessories that are governed by the National Firearms Act.
| | Last Wednesday, the Iowa House passed Senate File 106, permitting law-abiding individuals to carry firearms while operating all-terrain vehicles, including snowmobiles. The bill received minor amendments in the House and will now be transmitted back to the Senate for a concurrence vote before being transmitted to the Governor. |
| | Yesterday, House Bill 3075 and House Bill 3076 were scheduled for a vote in the House Judiciary Committee. During the work session, the Committee Chair announced that the vote on these bills would be delayed until today, April 3rd, or more likely, Monday, April 7th. Please contact members of the committee by using the TAKE ACTION button below and continue to urge them to OPPOSE these bills. |
| | Anti-gun legislators have used procedural maneuvers to bypass deadlines and the committee hearing process by stuffing language from a defeated semi-automatic firearm ban bill into a new bill, Senate Bill 401. SB 401, as amended, is now over 2,600 words long and will ban semi-automatic rifles with a detachable magazine, “assault shotguns”, and standard capacity magazines. SB 401 could receive its second floor vote as early as today. Please use the TAKE ACTION button below to contact your Representative and urge them to oppose this bill and the procedural “gut and replace” tactics used to advance this bill.
| | April 2nd was the crossover deadline in West Virginia, meaning that bills that failed to advance from the chamber of origin are considered defeated for the session. The West Virginia House passed two pro-gun bills ahead of the deadline, that provide additional assurances for the firearms industry. |
| | Today, the Senate Executive Committee will hear SB 8, a bill to expand storage requirements and greatly increase penalties resulting in fines up to $10,000. Please use the Take Action link to contact committee members and ask them to oppose SB 8!
