The Bloomberg Gun Control Initiative is the Latest and Most Comprehensive Attempt to Restrict the Rights of Nevada's Law-Abiding Gun Owners.
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has committed 50 million dollars to fuel anti-gun efforts across the country, including right here in Nevada with his gun control initiative. In November 2016, Nevada voters have the opportunity to send a clear message to Bloomberg that his attempts to restrict our Second Amendment rights are not welcome in the Silver State!
The Bloomberg Gun Control initiative does nothing to stop criminals or address the broken mental health system, but rather creates a massive regulatory scheme that disproportionately impacts law-abiding gun owners. Individuals would be required to appear before a gun dealer to request a criminal background check prior to privately transferring a firearm, absent limited exceptions. Transfers include sales, gifts, loans, and leases. Failure to comply with this mandate each and every time you transfer or loan a firearm could result in stiff penalties and possible loss of an individual's Right to Keep and Bear Arms.
BLOOMBERG'S INITIATIVE WOULD NOT STOP CRIMINALS
The Bloomberg Gun Control Initiative does nothing to prevent criminals from obtaining firearms. Criminals will continue to break the law and acquire firearms where they do now: the black market, straw purchasers, theft, and illicit sources such as drug dealers.
CRIMINALIZES SALES, LOANS, LEASES AND GIFTS TOO!
The Bloomberg Gun Control Initiative would criminalize otherwise lawful transfers unless both parties appear jointly at a gun dealer, have a check run and are subjected to fees. "Transfers" are not just limited to sales but apply to any situation where a firearm owner relinquishes possession unless specifically enumerated as an exception.
THE EXCEPTIONS ARE VAGUE AND MISLEADING
The Bloomberg Gun Control Initiative supposedly exempts transfers for hunting and shooting ranges, but because of the initiative language the exemptions are restrictive and confusing. For example, a firearm can be borrowed to shoot as an established shooting range however that same activity away from an established range such as BLM land is not authorized and would constitute an illegal transfer.
THE INITIATIVE IS UNENFORCEABLE
"Universal" Background Checks are not universal because criminals will never comply with these requirements. According to the National Institute of Justice, "Universal" Background Checks are unenforceable without requiring complete gun registration. The Bloomberg Gun Control Initiative is an unenforceable, unfunded mandate on law-abiding citizens that will only divert law enforcement's already scarce resources.
