This morning, alongside firearm industry and advocacy partners, Governor Cox signed House Bill 214 into law during a ceremony in Salt Lake City, marking a significant legislative victory for protecting lawful commerce in the firearms industry.
House Bill 214 strengthens liability protections for firearm manufacturers, sellers, and trade associations by ensuring they cannot be held liable for the criminal misuse of lawful products. Additionally, these protections are occupied by the state legislature, meaning localities are preempted from passing ordinances that may subject these businesses from abusive litigation tactics. House Bill 214 represents a clear commitment to preserving the rule of law and protecting the rights of law-abiding citizens.
Additionally, earlier this week, Governor Cox also signed House Bill 314 into law. HB 314 streamlines Utah's firearm purchase process by eliminating a duplicative state-specific form that Federal Firearm Licensees (FFLs) are not required to use under federal law. HB 314 reduces unnecessary administrative burden on dealers while preserving Utah's existing background check system.
