U.S. Senate Confirms Doug Burgum as Secretary of the Interior

The U.S. Senate voted 80-17 to confirm former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum as the next Secretary of the Interior. The Department of the Interior is tasked with managing our nation’s public lands, including opportunities for hunting and recreational shooting.

The NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) was proud to support Governor Burgum’s nomination and urged NRA members to contact their senators to vote “yes” on his confirmation. In a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), NRA-ILA Executive Director John Commerford said, “Throughout his career in public service, Governor Burgum has demonstrated his respect for hunting as a primary use of public lands and his commitment to protecting and expanding access for hunters and recreational shooters. Governor Burgum possesses a unique understanding of the public access and land management issues which fall under the purview of the U.S. Department of the Interior.”

As Governor, Doug Burgum was a champion for the Second Amendment and our shared hunting heritage, therefore we have every confidence he will continue that legacy as Secretary. NRA-ILA stands ready to work in partnership with the Secretary and the Department of the Interior to ensure that our cherished freedoms are protected and expanded for generations to come.
