Colorado: "Sensitive Places" Carry Ban and 11% Guns and Ammunition Tax Hearings Announced

The Colorado General Assembly continues its anti-gun crusade, recently announcing hearings on anti-gun bills later this month, including SB 24-131, a massive expansion of "sensitive places" where concealed carry permit holders are prohibited from carrying, and an 11% excise tax on guns and ammunition. Additionally, HB 24-1174, legislation to increase training requirements for permit holders and certified instructors, is now eligible for a vote on the House floor! Use the three take action buttons below to contact House members and committee members to oppose this attack on your Second Amendment rights!

"Sensitive Places" Concealed Carry Restrictions

Adding on to their already massive pile of unconstitutional gun bills this session, anti-gun extremists introduced Senate Bill 24-131 last month, a measure severely limiting places where firearms may be carried in Colorado, including polling places, public parks, community centers, churches, college campuses, and more.

Nothing in the bill requires these “sensitive places” to have any measures to protect citizens and prevent armed criminals from ignoring this arbitrary boundary and entering. 94% of mass shootings occur in these gun-free zones; signage is not enough to stop criminals. Law-abiding gun owners should not face criminal penalties for simply crossing arbitrary lines. Criminals, by their very nature, do not abide by laws or regulations; thus, they are undeterred by the prospect of encountering unarmed individuals. Instead, these zones disarm law-abiding citizens, leaving them vulnerable and defenseless in the face of danger.

If passed, this blatantly unconstitutional bill will certainly be challenged in court. Similar laws are already tied up in expensive litigation in states like New York, New Jersey, California, Hawaii, and Maryland.

SB24-131 is set to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, March 13th, at 1:30 pm in the Old Supreme Court Chambers. Please use the button below to contact committee members and urge them to OPPOSE SB24-131!

House Finance Committee on Monday, March 25th

11% Guns and Ammunition Excise Tax

HB24-1349 creates an 11% excise tax on the sale of all firearms, firearm accessories, and ammunition in the state. If passed, the tax will be on the ballot this Fall. Firearms and ammunition are already subject to an 11% federal excise tax through the Pittman-Robertson Act, along with a variety of other state and local taxes and fees. California is the only other state to enact similar legislation. This tax should be seen as nothing more than an attack on the Second Amendment and those who exercise their rights under it. HB24-1349 is set to be heard in the House Finance Committee on Monday, March 25th, at 1:30 pm. Please use the button below to contact committee members and urge them to OPPOSE HB24-1349!
