Alabama: Your Help Needed to Pass Lifetime Permit Bill In House Committee

Alabama Sheriffs are Pushing Hard to Kill Pro-Gun Measure

On March 11th, the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee will hold a public hearing on House Bill 39 to create a new lifetime carry permit.  The Senate Committee on Judiciary passed the companion bill, Senate Bill 47, last week.  Unfortunately, a number of sheriffs are attempting to stall this much needed upgrade in both chambers.  The sheriffs want your money, but you want your rights.  Where do committee members stand?

Please contact committee members and ask them to SUPPORT HB 39.

March 11th at 9AM in Room 206
11 South Union St.
Montgomery, AL 36130

House Bill 39, sponsored by Representative Proncey Robertson, creates a new statewide, uniform system to provide lifetime permits for qualified applicants at a cost of $200. For state residents over 65, the fee drops to $150.

Don’t listen to the “fake news” being pushed by opponents of this bill.  Most aspects of the current permitting process will not change.  The application for the lifetime permit will collect the exact same information as the current permit.  Also, like current permits, it will not be an endorsement on your driver’s licenses or visible to anyone outside of Alabama.  Individuals interested in obtaining a lifetime permit will apply at their local sheriff’s office for a background check and to fill out the appropriate paperwork.

In addition to providing for a lifetime permit, HB 39 also creates a pathway for concealed carry permits to get back the NICS background check bypass that was stripped from permittees last year.  The ATF pulled Alabama’s exemption to the background check after an investigation revealed that sheriffs were handing out permits to prohibited persons without conducting background checks.  This means that because of the sheriffs, YOU have to get a background check done every time you purchase a firearm from a dealer.  But now the sheriffs are trying to kill HB 39 instead of looking out for your Second Amendment rights.  The sheriffs have proven themselves unreliable, it’s time for a new system in Alabama!

Don’t let them take this option from you!  Press the “Take Action” button now to let committee members know that you want HB 39 to pass.

It’s time to stand up for the right to self-defense and let your elected officials know that you want this measure passed this session.

Again, please contact committee members and ask them to SUPPORT HB 39.
