Texas Senate and House Committees to Hold Public Hearings on Potential Future Gun Control Proposals in Austin and Houston Next Week!

Texas Senate and House Committees to Hold Public Hearings on Potential Future Gun Control Proposals in Austin and Houston Next Week!

In a shameless effort to exploit the El Paso, Midland, and Odessa tragedies, gun control advocates have demanded that the Texas Legislature pass billionaire-backed radical restrictions on your rights.  Your state lawmakers need to hear from you at two public hearings next week!

Anti-gun extremists will undoubtedly use these hearings as an opportunity to push for red flag gun confiscation laws, bans on commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms, limits on standard capacity magazines, and so-called "universal” background checks.  These checks which would require all private firearm transfers be conducted through a licensed dealer, involve completion of extensive federal paperwork and require payment of an undetermined fee.  Only honest Texans will comply with this scheme, which would be unenforceable without gun registration.

Austin Hearing - Tuesday, March 10

On Tuesday, March 10, the Texas Senate Select Committee on Mass Violence Prevention & Community Safety will hold a public hearing at the State Capitol and take public testimony on the following charge:

  • Examine ways to keep firearms out of the hands of individuals who would not pass a federal background check, while protecting the Second Amendment and Texans' right to bear arms.  Examine whether stranger-to-stranger gun sales in Texas should be subject to background checks.

The hearing will start at 9:00 am and be held in the Senate Finance Committee room (E1.036) in the Capitol Extension.  Parking is available in the Capitol Visitors Parking Garage, located at 1201 San Jacinto between Trinity & San Jacinto streets.

Public testimony will be limited to 2 minutes per person.  If submitting written testimony, please provide 15 copies to the committee clerk at the meeting, with your name on each.

Houston Hearing - Wednesday, March 11

On Wednesday, March 11, the Texas House Select Committee on Mass Violence Prevention & Community Safety will hold a public hearing in Houston and take public testimony on the following issues:

  • Examine options for strengthening enforcement measures for current laws that prevent the transfer of firearms to felons and other persons prohibited by current law from possessing firearms;
  • Examine impediments and challenges to the timely reporting of relevant criminal history information and other threat indicators to state and federal databases;
  • Evaluate current protocols and extreme risk indicators used to identify potential threats and consider options for improving the dissemination of information between federal, state, and local entities and timely and appropriate intervention of mental health professionals.

The hearing will start at 9:00 am and be held in the Student Center Ballroom, Student Center South (Room 210) at the University of Houston, located at 4455 University Drive in Houston, 77204.  Public parking is only available in the Welcome Center Student Garage located at 4848 Calhoun Road.   Validation tickets for parking can be retrieved from the witness registration table at the hearing.

Public testimony will be limited to 3 minutes per person.  If submitting written testimony, please provide 15 copies to the committee clerk at the meeting, with your name on each.

It is critical that you attend this hearing to respectfully inform the committee that we don’t need failed, California-style gun control proposals to make us safer.  We need better enforcement of current laws, not new legislation that will only restrict the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens instead of stopping violent criminals.
