SB 392 would create a new lifetime carry permit issued by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) to state residents. The process for a lifetime permit under SB 392 is simple and straightforward. After requesting a background check from their local sheriff, an individual can apply to any ALEA office where driver’s licenses are issued, pay a one-time fee of $150, and after submitting a completed application and favorable background report, have a permit for life.
The lifetime permit law will follow existing statute in all material respects, but will provide additional options not currently available to permit holders. SB 392 gives individuals the choice of having a lifetime permit endorsement placed on their driver’s license or state identification card, or they can choose to have a separate card issued by ALEA. The permit cost will be split between the local sheriff’s conducting the background check and ALEA to handle the administration of the new permit process.
This is an important change to the existing permitting system that will give law-abiding gun owners the option of deciding which route is best suited for their individual self-defense needs. Don’t let anyone take this important choice from you – contact your Senator today and let him/her know that you want the option of a lifetime permit!
Time is running out on this year’s legislative session and opponents of this pro-gun legislation will use any delaying tactic they can to kill SB 392. It is important that you use TAKE ACTION button above to contact your State Senator and respectfully ask him or her to support SB 392 when it comes to the Senate floor for final passage.
