Tomorrow, the House Civil Justice Subcommittee will hear gun control legislation, House Bill 2302. Your NRA-ILA has learned that an anti-gun amendment has been filed that attempts to restrict the Second Amendment rights of young adults aged 18-20.
If amended, House Bill 2302 would impose an arbitrary age limit on purchasing commonly-owned firearms by creating a broad definition of so-called “assault weapons” that includes centerfire semi-automatic rifles with a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds, a semi-automatic pistol that is threaded for a suppressor or the capacity to hold a fixed magazine with more than 10 rounds.
Any legislative proposal that seeks to prevent law-abiding adults aged 18 to 20 years old from acquiring a firearm deprives them of their constitutional right to self-defense. This legislation is outright offensive and demeaning to Tennessee’s young adults who are otherwise allowed to vote, join the military, and exercise every other constitutionally guaranteed right.
The NRA supports efforts to prevent those who are a danger to themselves or others from getting access to firearms. However, we will continue to oppose gun control measures that only serve to punish law-abiding citizens.
Please contact the House Civil Justice Subcommittee and tell them to OPPOSE House Bill 2302 and any anti-gun amendment.
