On Tuesday, November 14, at 7:00PM, the Standish Town Council will be holding their monthly meeting. The agenda includes a discussion of a long-term land lease agreement of town property for the expansion of range operations with the Standish Fish & Game Club.
Until recently, the discussions on this joint venture between the Town Council and the Club were positive. Now, several anti-gun Standish residents and town council members have expressed opposition to the lease/expansion after having learned that it is an NRA-affiliated club, which requires all of its members to also enroll in the NRA. They are demanding that the club change its by-laws and end this affiliation requirement before a new lease is to be approved.
This demand is unreasonable and violates the First Amendment right of association by trying to dictate a private club’s affiliation with the parent organization that sets range safety standards and provides membership benefits.
Please make plans to attend this town meeting to show support for the Standish Fish & Game Club efforts to lease land and expand their shooting sports facility without political interference. In addition, please respectfully contact council members by phone and by email here.
