Today, the conference committee on Senate Bill 2954 recommended that the Senate concur with the House amendments that were made to SB 2954. This bill will now go back to the Senate for final concurrence. Additionally, House Bill 2632 has been scheduled for a conference committee hearing tomorrow, April 21, at 8:30am. Please contact the Hawaii state Senators and urge them to DISAGREE with the House amendments to SB 2954 and the conference committee members to OPPOSE HB 2632. SB 2954 would expand the existing registration requirement and input law-abiding Hawaii gun owners into a federal biometric database, managed by the FBI, for continuous monitoring, and could be in violation of your Fourth Amendment rights. Positive hits in this system have not necessarily been adjudicated and could cause issues with an individual’s ability to exercise their constitutional rights. Additionally, this could result in a potential fee increase and cost gun owners more than what is already required in Hawaii due to the cost associated with adding individuals into this biometric database.
HB 2632 would expand the list of possible prohibited possessors to include anyone who has undergone or is undergoing emergency hospitalization.
