Yesterday, the Alaska Senate debated and passed Senate Bill 174 by a 13-5 vote. SB 174 now heads to the House where it will await committee referrals for further consideration. It is important that you contact your state Representative and politely urge them to SUPPORT Senate Bill 174 when it comes up for a vote.
SB 174 would allow students, faculty and guests to own, possess, carry, transport or store a firearm on areas of the University of Alaska campus where not prohibited by law. This legislation would limit the Board of Regent’s ability to regulate the possession and carry of firearms on campuses at the University of Alaska. A state-funded institution should not be allowed to impose rules more strict than state law, especially rules to limit one’s right to self-defense. Individuals should not be prevented from exercising their right to self-defense simply because they choose to seek a college education.
