On Tuesday, February 23, the Senate Education Committee passed campus carry legislation, Senate Bill 174, by a 3-1 vote. Sponsored by Senator Pete Kelly (R-Fairbanks), SB 174 would allow students, faculty and guests to own, possess, carry, transport or store a firearm on areas of the University of Alaska campus where not prohibited by law. This legislation would limit the Board of Regent’s ability to regulate the possession and carry of firearms on campuses at the University of Alaska. A state-funded institution should not be allowed to impose rules more strict than state law, especially rules to limit the right to self-defense. Individuals should not be prevented from exercising their right to self-defense simply because they choose to seek a college education.
SB 174 will now go to the Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration. Your NRA-ILA will continue to keep you updated as this legislation advances through the Alaska Legislature.
