Fairfax, Va.— The National Rifle Association applauds the passage of House Bill 336 by the New Mexico House and Senate. HB 336 would bring New Mexico into compliance with the federal NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007 (NIAA). To date 38 states have passed similar legislation to comply with NIAA.
"This legislation would help ensure that people who have been adjudicated mentally ill and are legally ineligible to purchase or possess a firearm don't get access to firearms," said Catherine Mortensen, NRA spokesperson. "For years, the NRA has been working to pass this important legislation. Representative Nate Gentry and Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto of Albuquerque were instrumental in its passage."
House Bill 336 would:
- improve the accuracy and completeness of the NICS by requiring the state to share records of persons adjudicated as mental defectives or committed to a mental institution and disabled from receiving or possessing a firearm pursuant to federal law;
- provide an open channel for restoration of an individual’s right to possess a firearm through the court system;
- make New Mexico eligible for federal grant money to improve record keeping and reporting.
