The North Carolina Sheriffs' Association (NCSA) is working overtime to defeat NRA’s efforts to eliminate the current Pistol Purchase Permit system that allows sheriffs to use arbitrary, personal discretion when determining who may lawfully purchase a handgun. This provision would replace the flawed system with the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). NICS is used in the majority of the country, and is a far more efficient, consistent system than what North Carolina sheriffs utilize.
The NCSA is asking all 100 North Carolina sheriffs to contact state Representatives and urge them to support an amendment that may be offered by state Representative Allan McNeil (R-78) which would remove this important pro-gun provision from House Bill 562. It is important that you contact your Sheriff TODAY, and ask him or her to support the Second Amendment and law-abiding gun owners. Urge your Sheriff to support replacing the Pistol Purchase Permit system with the far more efficient and consistent NICS system that is utilized in the majority of the country. Contact information for your Sheriff’s office can be located here. Be sure to ask for your sheriff's position on replacing the Pistol Purchase Permit system with NICS, and let us know what you are told by calling us at (703) 267-1170, toll-free at (800) 392-8683 or by emailing us at [email protected].
