Last week, House Bill 1255 passed the Senate floor unanimously. HB 1255, sponsored by state Representative Charles Sargent (R-61), and its Senate companion, Senate Bill 1215, sponsored by state Senator Jack Johnson (R-23), would require the chief law enforcement officer of a jurisdiction to certify the transfer or making of a firearm, as required by the National Firearms Act, within 15 days if the person is not prohibited from receiving or possessing a firearm by law. This legislation also permits an applicant to appeal a denial to the circuit court. HB 1255 was substituted for its Senate companion, SB 1215, and passed by the House of Representatives unanimously on April 2, 2015. HB 1255 has been transmitted to the desk of Governor Bill Haslam (R) where it will await his consideration.
