Yesterday, the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee voted unanimously to pass bipartisan-supported Legislative Document 176, as amended.
Sponsored by state Representative Stanley Short (D-106), this critical piece of legislation would prevent non-Maine residents from collecting signatures or handling petitions in any manner.
People’s veto referendums and direct initiatives were designed for the people of Maine to be able to directly influence the governing laws if they do not agree with them or want to see a change. This special privilege is somewhat unique to Maine and should not be abused by outside money and power that is not representative of Mainers’ views.
Thank you to the members of the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee as well as to all of those called and emailed in support. LD 176 will now be considered by the full House of Representatives after the committee amendment is drafted.
