Today, the Montana Senate passed Senate Bill 143 by a 25 to 24 vote. Sponsored by Senator Cary Smith (R-27), SB 143 would prohibit restrictions on firearms on university property, though the Board of Regents would retain regulatory authority on things such as discharge, unholstered carry, dormitory storage, and possession at campus events where alcohol is served and consumed.
SB 143 will receive a final vote on the Senate floor TOMORROW, February 5, and it is imperative that your Senators hear from you. During today’s vote, state Senators Duane Ankney (R-20), Taylor Brown (R-28), Ed Buttrey (R-11), Pat Connell (R-43) and Bruce Tutvedt (R-3) voted in opposition to SB 143. Please contact them and strongly but politely urge them to reconsider their vote on allowing law-abiding citizens to utilize their fundamental right to self-defense by voting “YES” on Senate Bill 143 when it comes up for third reading. Also, please contact your own Senator and urge them to SUPPORT SB 143 tomorrow. All Senators can be contacted by calling (406) 444-4800 or by using the online form.
