Today, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves (R) visited Van’s Sporting Goods in Rankin County and took the opportunity to remind Mississippi gun owners and sportsmen that the state will celebrate its inaugural “Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday” this Friday, September 5, through Sunday, September 7. He encouraged them to visit their local firearms and outdoor retailers this weekend. A copy of his office’s press release can be found here.
Thanks to his leadership and that of state Senators Philip Moran (R-Kiln) and Giles Ward (R-Louisville), and state Representative Jeff Smith (R-Columbus), NRA-supported Senate Bill 2425 passed during the 2014 Regular Session of the Mississippi Legislature and was signed into law by Governor Phil Bryant (R). This bill created an annual state sales tax-free weekend for the individual purchase of firearms, ammunition, archery equipment and certain hunting supplies. A complete list of eligible and non-eligible items for this tax exemption, as determined by the Mississippi Department of Revenue, can be found here.
Reeves also urged Mississippi outdoorsmen to support Amendment 1 this fall, the NRA-backed Right to Hunt and Fish Constitutional Amendment that will appear on the November 4 ballot. This important safeguard will ensure that future wildlife conservation and management decisions are based on sound science and will protect the state’s strong sporting heritage for generations to come.
