Maryland: House Committees to Vote on SB 281 Tomorrow

Thursday, March 28, 2013

NRA-ILA has been informed that Senate Bill 281 will be voted on tomorrow, March 29, by the House Judiciary Committee and the House Health and Government Operations Committee.  Your immediate help is needed! Please plan to show up at the State House tomorrow morning by 10:00 am and pack the halls in advance of this vote.  After the floor session, please go to the House Office Building, visit your delegate or delegates and attend the voting session.  Governor Martin O’Malley is desperately using arm-twisting politics and deceptive procedural maneuvers to try and ram through this deeply flawed legislation.  Attend and encourage delegates who are standing on the side of the Second Amendment, and remind those who are crumbling under pressure that a vote in favor of O’Malley’s legislation is a vote against your civil rights.  Multiple amendments to Senate Bill 281 will be considered by members of these committees as well.  It is critical that you contact members of these committees NOW and your state Delegate(s) immediately to strongly urge them to oppose Senate Bill 281 and any amendments that would ban firearms from law-abiding citizens.

Some of the amendments offered to SB 281 are positive and would limit the number of cosmetic features that would qualify a commonly owned semi-automatic firearm as an illegal firearm under the concocted term “assault weapon,” eliminate registration of firearms and reduce the training requirements to purchase a handgun in Maryland.  However, these helpful amendments are being held up by O'Malley's deceptive tactics and political bullying.  For his own national political purposes, O’Malley is actively seeking to force amendments that would impose an outright BAN on those same semi-automatic firearms that the state legislature is ready to recognize as valuable self-defense tools.  For more information, please see NRA-ILA’s previous alert here.

This could be your last chance to stop sweeping gun control in Maryland this session.  Attend the voting session tomorrow morning and contact committee members and your state Delegate(s) NOW.
