As currently drafted, this ordinance includes numerous far-reaching provisions that are an affront to law-abiding citizens. This ordinance, at the least, would make the following changes:
- Bans the ownership and possession of any “firearm or other weapon” in Weston unless one obtains a permit for the ownership of these lawfully possessed items and registers them with the chief of police. If an individual does not submit to this licensing and registration scheme, they will be subject to a $500 fine.
- Infringes on your inherent right to self-defense. Connecticut statute provides protections for individuals using physical force in defense of oneself and third parties. However, this ordinance runs contrary to state law and only provides protections to “a person acting to protect his or her person” eliminating your ability to protect your loved ones.
- Mandates that residents must keep their firearms “in a securely locked box constructed of steel or similar material.” Everyone knows that firearms should be stored safety, particularly when housed with children, but it is NOT the Board’s business to dictate how law-abiding citizens store lawful items in their own homes. In a home invasion situation, this provision gives criminals the advantage.
