On Monday, December 10, the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee voted unanimously, 5-0, to allow deer hunting on Sundays on private property. New Jersey is one of only eleven states that restrict or ban hunting on Sundays. This antiquated “Blue Law” makes it difficult for hunters who work standard work weeks, or who have family responsibilities on Saturdays, to maintain their hunting traditions.
Assembly Bill 1538, sponsored by Assemblymen John Burzichelli and Alison Little McHose, is an important step toward removing all Sunday hunting barriers in the Garden State and is strongly supported by the NRA. This measure is necessary to enhance essential hunter recruitment and retention efforts. This bill is now on the Assembly calendar for consideration but it has not been scheduled for action.
