Nicole Kaufman said a terrifying experience many years ago prompted her to turn to guns for protection. She was about 16 and had just finished a night shift at Old Country Buffet. Her parents were gone to their cottage out of town. "I came home and all the lights were on in the house -- it was completely ransacked," she said, recalling the incident at their home in rural Fond du Lac.
