That leaves us with Ontario, where things get interesting. The registry has typically enjoyed fairly strong public support in Canada's most populous province, albeit with a strong urban rural split. Ontario Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty has been an outspoken supporter of gun control measures, including not just the gun registry, but also a handgun ban. With his party down in the polls, the Liberals might conclude that a little public safety chest thumping in favour of gun control might help paint the provincial Progressive Conservatives as dangerous radicals.
