On Thursday, May 28, the Louisiana House defeated House Bill 27, a bill that would have allowed adults with Concealed Handgun Licenses to carry a firearm for self-defense on college and university campuses. Specifically, the bill sought to afford students, faculty, administrators, and staff over the age of 21 the same rights on campuses as they have virtually everywhere else in the state.
We would like to extend our thanks to those NRA members who answered the call to action by contacting their legislators. We would also like to thank pro-gun State Representative Ernest Wooten (R-105) for his efforts on HB 27.
Despite the heated rhetoric about campuses becoming the “Wild West” and “drunken shootouts,” opponents, claiming to be experts on the issue could not provide statistics or solid facts as to why licensed adults should not have the opportunity to protect themselves on college and university campuses simply because they crossed an arbitrary boundary.
