House Bill 4853, a Lead Poisoning Prevention bill, contains language that could be used to target ammunition. While supporters of the bill had indicated they would correct this potential problem, the legislation passed out of the House without changes would remove the threat to ammunition manufacturers, distributors, users, and owners of property where firearms are lawfully discharged. The last group includes both formal range owners as well as landowners who allow occasional target practice or hunting on their property. This legislation, sponsored by Representative Harry Osterman (D-14) and Representative Deborah Graham (D-78), while certainly well intended, poses too great a potential threat to ammunition to pass in its current form.
Please contact your State Senator immediately and urge him to oppose HB 4853 as passed by the House of Representatives, and in any form that continues to pose a potential threat to ammunition. The general phone number for the Illinois State Senate is (217) 782-5715.
