Hunting season opened yesterday, and hardly anyone noticed. "It has picked up slowly over the last few years, but very few people take advantage of it," said Chris Garland, referring to Kentucky`s 14-day spring squirrel season that runs statewide through June 20. The annual hunt starts the first Saturday of June. "We estimate that about one-fifth of the people who hunt squirrels in the fall hunt in the spring season," added Garland, small-game biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. That would place about 20,000 hunters in the woods.
