Efforts are under way within the federal government to use computer technology to probe databases for information about possible terrorist activities. The Pentagon took the spotlight last week when it released a report—mandated by Congress—on its Terrorist Information Awareness (TIA) program. The TIA program has spurred the creation of a large coalition of conservative and liberal civil liberties groups all concerned with the program`s privacy implications.
