A film that climaxes in a massacre at a school in America has won the Palme d`Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Gus Van Sant, the director of Elephant, said his inspiration was a 1989 BBC film by the late Alan Clarke, also called Elephant, that depicted Northern Ireland`s sectarian violence as a relentless, anonymous march of murders.
