The cost of Canada`s federal firearms program is now estimated at $1 billion but the program is so poorly managed and monitored that it`s impossible to know the true price, the federal auditor-general says. The gun registry, originally estimated to cost a mere $2 million after fees from gun owners were collected, is a prime example of this government`s ongoing "inexcusable" failure to properly account for taxpayers` dollars, Auditor-General Sheila Fraser said.
