Just the mention of the name "Ed Rendell" drew jeers from the crowd of 300 activists arrayed on lawn chairs and picnic blankets here for a recent rally of the Central Concerned Sportsmen. Attorney General Mike Fisher, the Republican candidate for governor, pressed the case home: As mayor of Philadelphia, Rendell crusaded to sue gun manufacturers for the costs of street violence and signed a city ban on assault weapons that the legislature had to overturn. Rendell, now the Democratic nominee for governor, would put the state on a slippery slope toward disarmament with his proposal to limit handgun purchases to one a month, Fisher warned. "One gun a month - that`s today!" he said. "If he`s governor, I`m sure he`ll have many more ideas."
