Two men had broken through the screened porch of Melvin Hogg Jr.'s home in Jacksonville, Fla. When the homeowner saw one forcing his way through the window, he shot and killed the intruder. The other fled. The slain man was recently let out of prison, nearly half the sentence of his burglary conviction suspended. Ruling the shooting justifiable, the assistant state's attorney said: "People have the right to protect their property and their home. I've got a lot of sympathy for a homeowner who feels his life is in danger."
