Anti-Hunters Want You Labeled as a Domestic Terrorist

Being an integral part of America's remarkable wildlife restoration success story is, at times, a thankless job, but having some animal "rights" fanatics petition the White House to label us as "domestic terrorists" for our efforts is something new altogether.  These anti-hunting zealots state that NRA and other pro-hunting, pro-conservation organizations are a "menace in our midst" and "want our native predators like bears, wolves, wild cats, and the like decimated to the brink of extinction."  It's likely the petitioners are the same peaceful folks who have recently issued death threats to wolf hunters.

H.R. 3440, The “Recreational Shooting Protection Act”

In 2010, the BLM closed 400,000 acres of publicly-owned, national monument lands in three states to recreational shooting activities.  BLM is currently proposing to close an additional 600,000 acres in southern Arizona. In response to this, Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) introduced H. R. 3440, the “Recreational Shooting Protection Act.” H. R. 3440 prevents a ban on recreational shooting on BLM monuments.  The bill requires congressional approval for any recreational shooting closures or restrictions proposed on BLM-managed national monuments.  This bill further directs the BLM to manage national monument land in a manner that supports, promotes, and enhances recreational shooting opportunities.

Obama Administration Endangered Lives to Justify Gun Control

In all of my years fighting on behalf of the National Rifle Association to defend the Second Amendment, I never thought I would see a White House so vehemently opposed to gun ownership that it would be willing to arm violent criminals and endanger American lives in pursuit of a gun control agenda.

Suppressors-Good for Our Hearing . . . and The Shooting Sports

It's time that policymakers--legislators, wildlife commissioners and gun club board members--move to eliminate the laws, regulations and policies that discourage or prohibit suppressor use. In addition to decreasing the incidents of permanent hearing loss, it will help keep the shooting sports alive and well by decreasing the calls to close shooting areas and hunting lands. Suppressors may not be for everyone, but that's the best aspect of freedom--it is your choice.

Poltical Report: Hunting Season: A Win for Some is a Win for All

It`s that time of year. For many of us, hunting seasons are well under way, while others among us are doing our last-minute scouting, sighting in our rifles one last time, or packing and repacking bags for long-awaited trips to new hunting grounds. No matter what you hunt or where you hunt it, the rituals of preparing for the seasons are both timeless and a marker of time`s passage.

Slaughter on the Island: Highjacking the Flag of Conservation

Nestled in the Pacific Ocean approximately 30 miles from the mainland of Santa Barbara sits a beautiful island where majestic Roosevelt elk and Kaibab mule deer roam free. Ferried across a treacherous channel, these grand species were brought to Santa Rosa Island some 80 years ago, but their days are officially numbered. A complete slaughter of these magnificent animals is scheduled to occur before the midnight tide rises on Dec. 31, 2011. Sharpshooters will be en route to the island soon to comply with a 1996 court settlement and 2007 legislation that reinstated the extermination order.

CR Provision Includes Partial Delisting of Recovered Wolf Populations: An Important First Step

The National Rifle Association today thanked Members of Congress for taking an important step in the right direction for wolf and game species conservation. The continuing resolution FY 2011, scheduled for votes later this week, includes a general provision that delists certain populations of wolves from the Endangered Species Act.  Wolf populations in Montana and Idaho as well as portions of Utah, Oregon and Washington would be declared recovered by reinstating the 2009 ruling from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), paving the way for regulated wolf hunting seasons.  The NRA would also like to thank the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, the Boone and Crockett Club, and Safari Club International for joining together in this important effort to place the states in charge of wolf conservation.

The Plan To Get The Lead Out

Suppose you went to the gun store to pick up a box of rifle ammunition for target practice on a friend’s farm. Or maybe you needed a box of handgun ammo for use at your local outdoor range. But when you got there, you were told that traditional ammunition, using lead bullets, was now illegal. Instead, you could buy alternative ammunition that cost much more. The store had a good supply of alternative ammunition for shotguns, and some of it was reasonably priced. But the store had hardly anything for rifles or handguns. That’s what nearly happened in 2010. And it may happen yet.

No-Net-Loss: Ensuring Future Generations A Place To Hunt

Concerned hunters working together with NRA-ILA have found a solution: protect our public hunting lands with No-Net-Loss laws.

Overhauling Hunter Education To Recruit The Next Generation

Most things can be improved, except for the perfect day afield when you feel that daybreak flight of ducks churn the air just above your head. Since NRA spearheaded the creation of hunter education programs in 1949, the content and formats have changed at a glacial pace. Efforts to simplify and improve these programs are critical as we try to recruit the next generation of hunters and preserve the future of America`s outdoor heritage. Hunting is safe by any statistical measure and hunter education programs have played an instrumental role in that safety.
