Assault Weapons Ban Has Rough Road Ahead, Grassley Says

Sen. Charles E. Grassley, R Iowa, said vulnerable Senate Democratic incumbents could be the key to preventing an assault weapons ban from passing this year.In an interview on C SPAN's "Newsmakers"set to air Sunday, Grassley acknowledged that support for such a ban remains strong in some quarters of the Democratic Party, but he said he believes the electoral politics make it a difficult prospect at best."I feel that an outright ban would have a difficult time passing the [Republican run] House of Representatives, so that would keep it from becoming law," Grassley said. "But when you have five, six, maybe even seven Democratic senators from rural areas, that come from Second Amendment states ... I think that is a tough go in the Unites States Senate."

The cop-killer bullet myth

Give the administration credit for its creativity. The theatrical show President Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. are putting on in their effort to foist gun control on the public disguises a more subtle push to disarm America in the name of protecting cops. On Monday, Mr. Obama invited police chiefs from towns that have had mass shootings to the White House for a discussion on firearms and, more importantly, a photo opportunity. The administration is harnessing the respect the public has for officers who keep them safe to undermine the Second Amendment. That's why the White House's "reduce gun violence" to do list included a call for banning armor piercing ammunition, or in the words Mr. Obama used in his Jan. 16 announcement, "bullets designed to inflict maximum damage." After meeting with law enforcement last month, Mr. Biden called them "cop killer bullets." Their concern is entirely imaginary.

Gun owners are people, too

For one, criminals tend to ignore laws and are loath to provide their personal identification in the midst of pursuing criminal activity. As Glenn Kessler reported in the Washington Post this week, a 2004 survey of inmates in state prisons who were incarcerated for crimes committed with handguns found that only 11% bought their guns from licensed gun dealers. The vast majority acquired them from friends, on “the street,” or stole them. So now matter how well intentioned, background checks are bound to miss the very people whose backgrounds may prevent them from owning guns.

The ‘40 Percent’ Myth

Gun-control advocates have recently been throwing around an impressive new number. President Obama used it last Wednesday, claiming: “as many as 40 percent of guns are purchased without a background check.” Vice President Biden and everyone from the New York Times to the Wall Street Journal to USA Today repeatedly use it. That “fact” provided the principal support for his first announced gun-control proposal, “universal background checks.” But unless you include family inheritances and gifts as “purchases,” it is simply false.

Mamet: Gun Laws and the Fools of Chelm

Karl Marx summed up Communism as "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs." This is a good, pithy saying, which, in practice, has succeeded in bringing, upon those under its sway, misery, poverty, rape, torture, slavery, and death. * 'In announcing his gun control proposals, President Obama said that he was not restricting Second Amendment rights, but allowing other constitutional rights to flourish.' For the saying implies but does not name the effective agency of its supposed utopia. The agency is called "The State," and the motto, fleshed out, for the benefit of the easily confused must read "The State will take from each according to his ability: the State will give to each according to his needs." "Needs and abilities" are, of course, subjective. So the operative statement may be reduced to "the State shall take, the State shall give."
