As we reported in October 2008, after a lengthy legal battle over the unconstitutional confiscation of lawfully owned firearms during Hurricane Katrina, the City of New Orleans agreed to settle a lawsuit initiated by NRA. A permanent injunction was issued against the city, and then-Mayor Ray Nagin. The Second Amendment Foundation assisted NRA in the legal battle against Mayor Nagin and the City of New Orleans.
Judge Carl J. Barbier presided over the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Judge Barbier signed the permanent injuncation against the City of New Orleans. The city admitted the firearm confiscations carried out by Nagin were unconstitutional and illegal.
This week, the embattled Nagin was sentenced to 10 years in prison for public corruption. The charges stemmed from actions during his time as mayor of New Orleans. Judge Ginger Berrigan handed down the sentence after a jury convicted Nagin on 20 of 21 counts of bribery, wire fraud, tax evasion and other charges in February of this year
Nagin a former member of Michael Bloomberg's gun control group, "Mayors Against Illegal Guns", is allegedly New Orleans' first mayor to be convicted and sent to prison for public corruption.
Nagin was a major player in the travesty that occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. At that time, his idea of maintaining order and public “safety” was to instruct police and other law enforcement officers to confiscate lawfully-owned firearms from the city’s citizens, stripping them of their means of self-defense at precisely their time of greatest peril.
If you’ve forgotten how the Second Amendment was trampled upon following Hurricane Katrina, or if you have friends or family members who still naively believe “it can’t happen here,” please see NRA’s compelling video on the subject by clicking here, or read this article.
