As we reported last week, for nearly 20 years, the NRA has fought tirelessly to oppose any United Nations effort to undermine the constitutional rights of law-abiding American gun owners.  That fight has grown more intense lately, as the U.N. and global gun banners have markedly stepped up their attack on our Second Amendment freedoms by including civilian arms in the proposed Arms Trade Treaty.

Learning Pains at the Brady Campaign? Pain, Yes. Learning, No.

Ever since the Brady Campaign was formed in 1974 as the National Council to Control Handguns, it has used over-the-top, fear-mongering, rabble-rousing rhetoric, in an effort to win support for banning all handguns, small handguns, or "assault weapons;" block Right-to-Carry and other laws protecting the right to use firearms for self-defense; and promote its cockamamie Second Amendment theories.

Critical Second Amendment Ruling--Federal Court Defends Right to Keep and Bear Arms

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois ruled this week that it is unconstitutional for Chicago to treat people with non-violent misdemeanor convictions the same as convicted felons.  The NRA-supported case, Gowder v. Chicago, involves plaintiff Shawn Gowder, who was convicted as a first-time offender for mere possession of a firearm in violation of Illinois law in 1995. His misdemeanor record did not block him from getting a state Firearm Owner's Identification card, so he could still legally possess a gun in Illinois.

Let's Keep the Good News Coming

We're not saying that things are going so well that Lady Luck is trying to tell us to run out and buy a lottery ticket. But there has been some good news lately.  Pro-Second Amendment Gov. Scott Walker's seven-percentage-point victory in the recent recall elections in Wisconsin--a great victory for gun owners in its own right--calls into question Mr. Obama's ability to win that state, which he carried by 13 percentage points in 2008. And a recent poll shows that Gov. Mitt Romney and the president are virtually tied in Michigan, a state President Barack Obama previously won by 16 percentage points. And nationally, Gov. Romney has narrowed the gap with Obama in recent polls.

How Many Anti-Gun Activists Does it Take . . . ?

. . . to sort simple statistics incorrectly?  The answer is, "Just a handful of busy beavers at the Violence Policy Center (VPC)."  In April, VPC posted a press release on its website titled "Massachusetts Has Lowest Gun Death Rate in Nation," the gist of which is that states with lower gun ownership and stronger gun control laws had the lowest rates of gun-related death in 2009, and vice versa. VPC said that the the five states with the lowest firearm-related death rates were Massachusetts, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut (which have relatively less gun ownership) and the five with the highest rates were Louisiana, Alabama, Montana, Wyoming and Mississippi (which have relatively higher gun ownership). The "strong" state-level gun laws VPC had in mind were "assault weapon" bans, purchase permits, and restrictive open and concealed carry laws.
