Congressional Report on "Fast & Furious" Reveals Serious Misjudgments

This week, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) released Part 1 of a joint congressional report on the findings of the investigation into the "Fast & Furious" gun smuggling scandal.  The first part looks at the actions of the Phoenix BATFE regional office and the Arizona U.S. Attorney's Office. Parts 2 and 3 will be released in the coming months and will look at the roles of the Deputy Attorney General's office and the Justice Department's Criminal Division.

Maryland Concealed Carry Update

The United States District Court for the District of Maryland recently ruled that Maryland's requirement that applicants for a concealed carry permit show  "good and substantial reason to wear, carry, or transport a handgun" is unconstitutional.  According to the court, the existence of the right to bear arms "is all the reason [an applicant] needs."  The court accordingly ordered the State promptly to process plaintiff Raymond Wollard's permit application without consideration of the "good and substantial" requirement.

Obama Shows His True Position on Guns

NRA has reported for the past four years about Barack Obama's long anti-gun record.He tries to convince gun owners that he is not anti-gun, even as his administration has taken numerous actions that attack gun owners' rights, such as imposing multiple sales reporting requirements on some long guns, and protecting Eric Holder from cooperating with the "Fast & Furious" investigation.But on July 25th, in a speech to the Urban League, Obama showed his real beliefs, when he once again endorsed a ban on semi-auto firearms.

BATFE Continues Campaign Against Whistleblowers

In their latest attempt to protect whistleblowers from BATFE reprisal, on July 18 Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) sent a letter to BATFE Acting Director B. Todd Jones, asking him to clarify the comments he made in a video message sent to agency employees. In the video, entitled "Choices and Consequences," Jones states, "Choices and consequences mean, simply, that if you make poor choices, that if you don't abide by the rules, that if you don't respect the chain of command, if you don't find the appropriate way to raise your concerns to your leadership, there will be consequences."

Olympic Shooting Sports on the Rise, But Not in the UK

Just as governments are meeting to negotiate a U.N. Arms Trade Treaty that could have devastating effects on legal gun ownership everywhere, word comes that the shooting sports are more popular than ever across the globe. Critical Second Amendment Ruling--Federal Court Defends Right to Keep and Bear Arms

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois ruled this week that it is unconstitutional for Chicago to treat people with non-violent misdemeanor convictions the same as convicted felons.  The NRA-supported case, Gowder v. Chicago, involves plaintiff Shawn Gowder, who was convicted as a first-time offender for mere possession of a firearm in violation of Illinois law in 1995. His misdemeanor record did not block him from getting a state Firearm Owner's Identification card, so he could still legally possess a gun in Illinois.

Latest Drop in U.S. Murder Rate Will Confound Critics of Self-Defense Laws

Giving a positive character to the old expression, "same old stuff," this week the FBI preliminarily reported that violent crime has dropped yet again – for the 18th time in the last 20 years. According to the report, the estimated annual number of murders dropped 1.9 percent from 2010 to 2011 which, given the increase in the U.S. population during the year, would translate into a drop of between 2.5-3 percent in the per capita rate of murders.

Let's Keep the Good News Coming

We're not saying that things are going so well that Lady Luck is trying to tell us to run out and buy a lottery ticket. But there has been some good news lately.  Pro-Second Amendment Gov. Scott Walker's seven-percentage-point victory in the recent recall elections in Wisconsin--a great victory for gun owners in its own right--calls into question Mr. Obama's ability to win that state, which he carried by 13 percentage points in 2008. And a recent poll shows that Gov. Mitt Romney and the president are virtually tied in Michigan, a state President Barack Obama previously won by 16 percentage points. And nationally, Gov. Romney has narrowed the gap with Obama in recent polls.

Oral Arguments Presented in Illinois Carry Case (Shepard v. Madigan)

Oral arguments took place today in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Shepard v. Madigan.  The case involves lead plaintiff Mary Shepard, an Illinois resident and a trained gun owner with no criminal record, who is licensed to carry a concealed handgun in both Utah and Florida.  The National Rifle Association is funding this case.  The Illinois State Rifle and Pistol Association is a co-plaintiff in this case.

Rep. Don Young Gets Answers from BATFE on Dealer Inspections

Over the past few months, there has been a flurry of reports from Alaska gun dealers that Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives inspectors had improperly requested that Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) allow their firearms transaction records to be removed from the business or copied.U.S. Rep. (and NRA board member) Don Young (R-Alaska) sent a letter to BATFE, questioning this practice and challenging the agency to provide a written response on a number of key issues.
