Idaho: Secure Campuses Bill Being Heard this Wednesday

Monday, February 10, 2014

This Wednesday, February 12, the Idaho Senate State Affairs Committee is scheduled to hear Senate Bill 1254, introduced by state Senator Curt McKenzie (R-13).  As previously reported, SB 1254 would permit qualified retired law enforcement officers and law-abiding adults who have obtained an Idaho “enhanced” concealed carry license to possess a firearm on public college or university campuses.  However, this legislation would provide universities discretion to prohibit qualifying individuals from carrying within a student dormitory or residence hall and a public entertainment or sporting facility with a seating capacity of more than 1,000 persons.  The specific provisions of SB 1254 ensure that responsible, law-abiding individuals with enhanced training are able to carry a firearm for self-defense while on a public college or university campus.

Unfortunately, many Idaho university presidents have made it known that they are strongly opposed to this legislation.  Further, they have been relying on scare tactics, half-truths and whole lies to bolster their position.  Your NRA strongly believes in the benefit of securing Idaho campuses through lawful exercise of the Second Amendment, and now more than ever, it is important to contact your state Senator to express support for SB 1254.  Contact information for state Senators can be found here.

SB 1254 is an important step toward protecting students and faculty on campus. Uniform laws, regulations and policies regarding firearms and weapons on state college and university campuses are essential for public safety, and, as such, serve to advance a substantial public interest.  Using the contact information provided below, please call AND e-mail members of the Senate State Affairs Committee TODAY and urge them to support SB 1254 on Wednesday.
