On Wednesday, the second regular session of the 69th General Assembly began in Denver.
After an outright assault against your individual liberties and Second Amendment rights during the 2013 legislative session, legislators from across Colorado convened in Denver to take the next step. Although your voices were ignored during the last session, your cries for freedom rang true as the first state legislators in state history were recalled late last year for their unrelenting attacks on your rights as a law-abiding gun owner.
The momentum brought about by these historic recalls has only grown stronger since Election Day last September and was evident in the first bills introduced during the opening days of the 2014 legislative session.
House Bill 14-1063, sponsored by state Representative Justin Everett (R-22), would allow for the use of deadly force for self-defense at a person’s place of business. This bill extends the legal protection for self-defense currently provided by the “Castle Doctrine,” which is the law for in a person’s home.
Senate Bill 14-038, introduced by state Senator Scott Renfroe (R-13), would prevent the Governor from suspending the distribution of firearms during a declared state of emergency.
With motivated pro-gun state legislators in Denver this year, we fully expect to see a number of bills protecting your Second Amendment rights introduced in the coming days and weeks. We also anticipate the anti-gun Democratic legislators, who so outrageously stole away your rights last session, to attempt to infringe upon your rights again with restrictive and ill-conceived legislation.
