Connecticut: Most Restrictive Gun Control Bill in the Nation to be Voted on Tomorrow

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

You are needed in Hartford tomorrow to stand in opposition to the Connecticut General Assembly sabotaging your Second Amendment freedoms!

For the past several months, Senate Minority Leader John McKinney (R-28) and House Minority Leader Larry Cafero (R-142) have been orchestrating behind closed doors the most intrusive, restrictive “gun control” bill in our nation’s history.  These two anti-gun legislators seem to be so dedicated to preventing public input in the legislative process and destroying your Right to Keep and Bear Arms that they helped to schedule a vote on an Emergency Certification Bill (E-Cert), tomorrowApril 3.

Unveiled yesterday, this highly anticipated E-Cert is loaded with anti-gun measures that drastically infringe upon your Second Amendment rights with no impact on criminal access to or misuse of firearms.

Many egregious proposals have been rolled into this comprehensive gun control package, including:

  • Bans nearly all commonly owned firearms used for self-defense, arbitrarily adding more than 100 new firearms to the gun ban list.
  • Bans the sale, purchase and transfer of magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds of ammunition.
  • Creates a magazine registration scheme.
  • Requires an eligibility certificate for the purchase of any rifle or shotgun that mandates a training course, fingerprinting and a voluntary/involuntary mental health admissions check.
  • Requires an eligibility certificate and a background check to purchase ammunition.
  • Criminalizes the private transfer of a firearm.

An E-Cert, by design, allows this bill to be rushed through the legislative process.  Procedurally, the House Speaker and Senate President Pro Tempore jointly propose an E-Cert and send it directly to the state House or Senate floor for a vote.  This gun control package will be voted on tomorrow, April 3, by the state House and the Senate.

Therefore, we need you to call AND e-mail your state legislators NOW in opposition to the E-Cert.  Click here to view contact information for your state legislators.

An E-Cert circumvents two important tenets of the democratic process: public hearings and the committee process.  This creates several problems, particularly for a bill with such far-reaching constitutional implications.  The lack of a public hearing eliminates your opportunity for input on an issue that will profoundly affect your rights.  The elimination of the committee process removes the opportunity for legislators to develop meaningful language to improve the content of a bill.  Finally, aggressively pushing through legislation does not permit enough time for legislators to become fully versed on the bill language before voting.   This happened in New York in January and the politicians have since learned about its many errors, problems and "unintended consequences."

Your firearms freedoms could be stolen away TOMORROW if you do not act now.  It is imperative that you go to Hartford tomorrow for Vote Day to stand and fight for your rights with the NRA.

Details for Vote Day:

Date:  Wednesday, April 3

Time:  10:00 a.m.

Where:  210 Capitol Avenue in Hartford

Parking: Free parking will be available at Cabela’s in Hartford located at 475 East Hartford Boulevard North, East Hartford, CT 06118

Transportation:   A complimentary shuttle service will run between Cabela’s and the state Capitol between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In addition to calling and e-mailing your state legislators, please contact Representative Cafero and Senator McKinney and let them know how disgusted you are that they personally sold out and betrayed the rights of responsible gun owners in Connecticut by creating this backroom deal.
