California: Mayor Bloomberg Pushing Radical Gun Control Measures in California Cities and Counties – Your NRA Will Fight Back

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Throughout the State of California local cities and counties are being solicited to adopt radical gun control measures by the billionaire, social-engineer Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg.  We are already seeing the effects of his efforts, with several cities proposing ordinances so extreme that they were rejected by the California Legislature just this year.

For example, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors recently passed, on First Reading, a package of gun control measures, including a ban on the possession of so-called “large capacity magazines,” defined as ammunition feeding devices capable of holding more than 10 rounds.  It is likely that the anti-gun Board of Supervisors will finally approve the ordinance at today’s meeting, and that it will then be signed into law.  San Francisco is, unfortunately, not the only California city close to enacting ordinances from Bloomberg’s gun control wish list.  Sunnyvale voters will also be faced with a package of extreme gun control measures on their November 5th ballot, including a nearly identical magazine ban as the one under consideration in San Francisco.  And the City of Los Angeles has repeatedly placed a similar magazine ban on its agenda in the past year, but has not yet taken action to put the law into effect.

Your NRA has been closely monitoring this escalating situation in California cities and counties. They have also submitted letters opposing such ordinances to various cities, including to San Francisco, Sunnyvale and Los Angeles.  But, the NRA needs your help to keep an eye open in your city council or county board of supervisors.  Please let us know of any gun control ordinances being proposed at 800-392-8683 or by e-mail at state&local@nrahq.org.  The NRA is dedicated to opposing all such measures that infringe on law-abiding gun owners’ rights and, where necessary, challenging such infringements in courts.

The NRA has already instructed its California legal team at Michel & Associates, P.C. to immediately file a Second Amendment civil rights lawsuit challenging the proposed “large capacity magazine” possession ban.  Once such a ban goes into effect, residents will have a short window to surrender their magazines to police or remove them from the city; otherwise such magazines will be confiscated and their owners likely prosecuted.  As the NRA’s letters specifically point out, banning ammunition magazines holding 10 or more rounds – magazines owned by millions of law abiding citizens for self-defense – infringes on the right to keep and bear arms guaranteed by the Second Amendment.  The Supreme Court recently made clear, firearms and accessories “typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes” or those “in common use” are protected by the constitution.  So the NRA’s attorneys will seek to prevent such a ban from taking effect.

If you will be affected by the unlawful magazine bans in San Francisco or Sunnyvale, please consider contacting Michel & Associates, P.C., to discuss your options.

To assist in the fight against these persistent and pernicious attacks on gun owners’ rights in California, please also consider donating to the NRA Legal Action Project here. Your donation will be used for the benefit of Californians.  In the unlikely event that neither law passes, the funds will be put towards challenging other unconstitutional restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms in California.  For a summary of the many actions the NRA legal team has taken or is currently taking on behalf of California gun owners, click here.

Second Amendment supporters should also be careful about supporting litigation efforts promised by other individuals and groups without access to the necessary funding, relationships, firearm experts, and experienced lawyers on the NRA’s national legal team.  The NRA’s team of highly regarded civil rights attorneys and scholars has the resources, skill, and expertise to maximize the potential for victory.
