Leontaye Johnson of Augusta, Ga. was returning home at around 4 a.m. when he spotted a man attempting to break into his house. Washington fired at the criminal, who returned fire. The attempted burglar was killed during the incident, while Johnson sustained non-life threatening injuries. Neighbor Leroy Turner noted that burglaries are not uncommon in the neighborhood, and stated, “I'm sorry that this tragedy happened to this family, but what do you expect? He was out trying to take advantage of someone else.” Authorities have made clear that they do not plan to charge Johnson.
