A cross-country crime spree came to an abrupt halt when an Illinois man attempted to rob Floyd Selleck's Palm Bay, Fla., gas station. The robber entered the station and began firing at Selleck, hitting him in the hand and arm. The station owner's son Arthur returned fire with a cal. .25 automatic, fatally wounding the thief, who was suspected of several car thefts and armed robberies in Illinois.
